Why I don't believe in "Detox"

I don't like the word "detox" for the same reason I don't like the word "diet".  To me it brings up visions of people selling things that will magically remove all the toxins from your body or, in the case of diets, result in quick, easy weight loss.  In both cases, after doing the detox or diet, you go back to doing whatever you were doing before.  This is not what works for health.

Your body is perfectly designed for doing detoxification all the time.  Your liver breaks down unwanted things, whether created in the body or something you have ingested, to be eliminated.  Your kidneys filter your blood to remove unwanted things to put in the urine for excretion.  You also "detox" via sweating and by exhalation.

The problem is that we are no longer living in a pristine, natural world.  We live in a world filled with artificial chemicals.  They are in our food, our water, the air we breathe, our household items, the cars we drive, the offices we work in.  We are bombarded with things that didn't exist 200 years ago.  Our detoxification systems are overwhelmed.

So, it isn't enough to do some sort of two week program.  We have to quit exposing ourselves to so many toxins in the first place.  This is why I wrote my book, "Living in our Toxic World".  If we want to avoid toxins, we need to know what we are being exposed to and what we can do instead.  If you haven't read my book, you might want to order it from my bookstore (you can also get it direct from Amazon).  Knowledge is power.  #toxins  #detox
